Kia ora cousin,

Congratulations and best wishes in your new venture in the creation of an official Ngai Tai website.A great idea and no doubt much work.

I for one am very appreciative of all the work youve done in tracking down our whanaus history.I have really enjoyed seeing your search bear fruit, it is absolutley facinating what youve achieved.
Pleased to see you tracked down the Sarah Maxwell story and look forward to hearing what youve discovered.

I had known about the Moncur marriage but not about a daughter to Thomas, and  had thought from corresponding with Jewels that the Moncur daughters were now thought to have been a sister and a child to Moncur himself(from a previous marriage)Capt. James Moncur himself also appears to have drowned fairly early before 1850 so we may yet discover other men were also in Nguengues life.
It seems odd to me that the first Maxwell child the daughter has not been recorded even in the records provided by the generation she was born in.Yet they appear to have recorded children who died unnamed (died at birth?)
Didnt our original Ngunu (spelt thus)have two daughters Maunga-tau-tari and Hinewai? Ngunu was the Grandmother of our Nguengue TeIrirangi/Maxwell/Moncur?
what I have available shows no issue from Nguengues siblings and states the children from Nguengue as  being the 6 males we know of with Hone Maxwell dying at 19, Hori left for overseas, James marrying wahine pakeha, Ropata(possibly marrying a Ani Hakipo)and Patariki and Anaru are as you know well documented.
Patariki appears in the dominant position in the lines of succession
The posting from Rhys had information on this aspect which was new for me
Genealogy/whakapapa is of course one of the most challenging puzzles yet so rewarding when you feel a sense of holding in the minds eye and heart the big picture of your family.
Your latest posting has given me much to ponder on and Im eagerly awaiting the next installment.
As to our information re decendants from our branch (Patarikis) try my cousin Gavin Maxwell (son of Ross, grandson of Hori) he had all the info from our reunion. For those of you in NZ who know Gavin check out the Firefighters 2005 calender for Child Cancer Foundation -I think hes Mr October. Alternatively cousin Bobby should have a copy of our booklet which he may let you photocopy.
Many hands make light work as they say and Im sure together as whanau someone will finally discover from which Scottish family our Thomas Maxwell originated.(Was Aberdeen confirmed in some way?) Thank you again Michel for all the hard work youve put in and also to the other cousins who have in various ways kept our flame of desire to learn more about our heritage alive In big or small ways each peice has helped us move slowly in the right direction.
