Don't waste your money on paid databases yet. Try your local library to see if they have anything. Mine has free Heritage Quest that you can access from home with nothing more than a library card. Heritage quest Has many census images, which is a good place to start, especially if you know what state your family was in, but you have to know where they were in 1930 or before. Census records aren't searchable after that. That will tell you the names, ages, sometimes birth years, country of origin of the person, and sometimes the country of origin of their parents, both husband and wife.
