My Ancestor was Anthony Maxwell who was born in 1803 at New York City, and died 1893 at Brooklyn, NY. His parents were Joseph Maxwell and Margaret Leacock. JosephMaxwell was probably born near New York City about 1775. I believe that Enoch Maxwell (1751-1830/31) was related to my Joseph… perhaps his uncle, or his father. Enoch, who was baptized in 1751 at Smithfield Pennsylvania, was the son of Anthony Maxwell and Eve Freeland (AKA Vreeland). Eve Vreeland was baptized in 1722 at New York City and it was probably her New York City relations that drew the Maxwells from Smithfield to back to that City sometime between 1754 and1775. Enoch Maxwell was listed in the Militia at New York City in 1775. For Enoch to be my ancestor he would have had to have been married twice as he married Mary Leggett Barker sometime after 1785. Enoch had a brother William Maxwell who was baptized at Smithfield in 1745 and he too is a likely candidate to be my ancestor… however, as there were numerous William Maxwells living at New York City, I have not yet been able to pick him from the bunch. As to the origin of these Maxwells I suspect that they were Scotch-Irish I am also attempting to establish Anthony Maxwell (c1754- ), as well as known siblings Cornelius Maxwell and his sister Effie Maxwell Cronin, were also the children of Anthony Maxwell and Eve Vreeland. Does anyone have any information about these Maxwells, or any Maxwell from Westchester Co., NY prior to 1850? I have much information on New York City Maxwells prior to 1850 and am happy to share with others who have New York City ancestors. |
