I believe some of the Maxwells, at least those that ended up in Dublin, Ireland, came here after the Jacobite wars in the early 18th Century. They supported the Stuarts against the Hanoverians. A branch became prominent in the legal profession in Dublin in the 19th and 20th Century. Another prominent branch were those that settled in Co. Cavan. They were protestant and may have been planters.
