| To proceed you would have to identify Maxwelton. Maxwelton in 1688 would probably be Maxwelton House in Dumfries the home of the Laurie family, nothing to do with Maxwells. Other Maxwelltons were beside Calderwood Castle in Lanarkshire and there may have been one near Newark Castle on the Clyde estuary. Maxwelltown in Kirkcudbrightshire did not exist until the middle of the 19th century. Also I would be inclined to check the name Joel. I have never heard of it in connection with Scotland or indeed anything as long ago as the 17th century. it is either a misspelling or a poor source. |
