Terregles Castle
This picture is from a photograph of a recently lost watercolour painting, painted during the building of the new mansion house in 1792. The old castle, standing behind the new building work on the left, shows the three phases of construction. The old, ruinous Herries tower from the 15th century is on the right. Sir John Maxwell's 16th century tower is in the centre and the newer 18th century wing is on the left. Copyright:Dumfries Museum
