Seeking information about ISABELLA MAXWELL, who married DANIEL JOHNSTON at Dinwoodie Green on November 11, 1779. They had six children, all born in Applegarth Parish: AGNES (bap. August 29, 1780), GEORGE (bap. January 4, 1782), MARY (bap. January 19, 1784), JANET (bap. September 11, 1785), WILLIAM (bap. September 18, 1788) and JOHN (bap. April 30, 1790). Isabella Maxwell died at the age of 28 giving birth to her sixth child on April 29, 1790 and is buried at Applegarth Church. Daniel Johnston died in late 1797, leaving orphaned young children. The following appeared in the Dumfries Weekly Journal on November 14, 1797, p. 4, col 1.: "Notice to Creditors. All persons having claims against Daniel Johnston, deceased, formerly tenant in Holm of Dinwoodie, in the Parish of Applegarth and County of Dumfries, are desired to give in a note of them, and how they are vouched, to Wellwood Maxwell of Barncleugh here, in order that a state of his affairs may be made up, and a dividend of the funds recovered made. Not to be repeated." WELLWOOD MAXWELL of Barncleugh was born in 1747 to James Johnstone, brother of Thomas Johnstone of Clauchrie, and his wife Barbara Maxwell. He changed his name to Maxwell in 1776 under the terms of an inheritance from a Maxwell uncle. He was a wealthy surgeon who had worked in Calcutta, and who married Catherine Maxwell, daughter of John Maxwell of Terraughty. In 1770 John Maxwell of Terraughty had married Agnes Maxwell of Munches and Dinwoodie, who inherited those estates in 1793. Sir William Fraser, The Book of Carlaverock (Edinburgh: n.p., 1873), vol. 2, pp. 576, 602. Does anyone know why Wellwood Maxwell of Barncleugh would have published at Notice on the death of Daniel Johnston? |
