Title: Elvin J Maxwell

I'm looking for my Maxwell family in Maine.  I know that my GGGGrandfather Elvin J. Maxwell,1838-1900, of Maine was a Sergeant, Company D, 15th Infantry Regiment Maine and then a Captain, Company C, 96th Infantry Regiment, US Colored Troop in the Civil War. It appears he may have had a life in the military as I know at least one child was born in Wisconsin and he found his wife in Mississippi. I've hit a road block with previous generations. His wife, Zoe Grant, was from Mississippi where most of the rest of my family is from. I've found Elvin on an 1850 Maine Census living with a Francis Jackson family. It appears he may have been orphaned (no other Maxwells in household) and just maybe living with grandparents with his middle intial possibly standing for Jackson.  Can anyone help?  Thanks!
