I am a descendant. The story from my grandmother, Bonnie Deas Smith, was that he ended up in Mississippi at the end of the war. His wife died, he went home to bury her and then came back. There he married John Grant's daughter. There is a lot about John Grant, he was an engineer and an abolitionist, which would make sense why his daughter would marry a dad-blame yankee. Their daughter was my grandmothers grandmother. Which makes him my third Great gpa. I had a note that his father was William Maxwell born 1757. The claim was he was married to a Jackson? I would love to see a copy of the letter asking to bury his first wife as well as any other info you might have found in the last five years since posting this. I have a little chest of drawers that they gave their daughter, Florence, when she was married in 1896.
