Jesse Maxwell did not ride with the Younger's, nor did my Grandfather George. My Grandfather George Maxwell was a cattleman in Muskogee county, Ok and sometimes rode with his Brother Jesse, a lawman to transport prisoners or pick them up for extra money. My Grandfather George was shot and killed by Pony Starr, at the shootout at Porum,Ok. A passenger train of people watched the whole shootout as 150 rounds of ammo was fired that day. Jesse wounded and another Maxwell brother wounded E.A.Maxwell. Jesse survived with only a scratch  and E.A.Maxwell was shot in the groan. Jesse later the next month while walking down main street of Muskogee was shot in the back by Jack Davis, a Bell-Starr gang member, 3 years later with lawyers  Daves was able to get off with only the time spent while on trial. Vigilanties, not sure that's spelled right, burnt Jack Davis and his brother's ranch house to the ground, they tried to lynch everyone involved for the death of the Maxwell's. The Maxwell's were on the side of the law and doing their duty. The gang later fled Oklahoma after getting off scott free.  Bell Starr was dead but the gang continued on for years after her death. Jack Daves was a coward and afraid to face Jesse face to face. Jesse was 39 when he was killed, shot through the back by Daves from a hotel exitway, the bullet piercing just below Jesse's heart and as he turned to pull his six shooter Daves shot him twice more through one of his shoulders, the bullets traveled through his body exiting the other shoulder. Jesse staggered into a drug store where fell, but didn't die till the next day. My grandfather was shot through the eye by Pony Starr as they rode up to the ranch house to arrest the gang for stealing cattle, among other things. My grandfather was 37 years old at the time. The Maxwell's were always on the side of the law...check your history!I'm Larry Maxwell a direct descendant of George Maxwell.
