Dear Phyllis: I saw your posting from 03/03. Darwin Stanton Maxwell is my ggguncle; his brother Charles Lowery Maxwell was my gggrandfather. I have a good deal of info on Darwin's early years; you may already have seen some of it on the Pleasants County WVa website, but I have some additional history that is not posted on the site, plus I have Darwin's military pension file. You might be interested to know that Darwin's great-grandfather was apparently not Samuel (Henry) Maxwell of Carlisle, Pa (you probably got that info from Edmond Howard Maxwell's history). According to the death records of Brooke/Hancock County, WV, Darwin's grandfather Samuel Maxwell died in 1865 and the record reflects that he was born in Ireland and that his father's name was William. Evidently, William's wife's name was Sarah. We have very little info on William other than what I relate here. Since Samuel was born in Ireland in 1776, William brought his family to America sometime afterwards. It is possible that at one time he lived in the Carlisle, Pa area because Samuel did not locate to Brooke/Hancock county until 1805. Wilmer Maxwell, who emailed you last year, was familiar with Edmond Howard Maxwell's history and tells me that he has found no evidence that a Samuel (Henry) Maxwell was a member or was buried at the church near Carlisle referenced by Edmond. Did you attend the Darwin Maxwell family centennial in 1986? I have some interesting materials generated from that reunion that I would be glad to share with you, but you may have that info already. Good luck and let me know if you would like any more info. Greg Maxwell |
