I am descended from a John Goodman Maxwell who is known to have lived in Devon for a while. I don't know of any other sons than the one I descend from and he is not on your list. However I think the two Christian names are too much of a coincidence to be anyone but the same person. Devon is not that big and Maxwell not that common a name.

Edward Cleaver Maxwell b 1850  d 1880 son of John Goodman Maxwell of Black Torrington Devon. (Black Torrington is a few miles NW of Oakhampton in Devon).   I have been unable to find much about JG except that he wrote "Sighs Smiles and Sketches" a collection of verses.  I think my father had a photo of the Maxwell home in Black Torrington (which burnt down) but I don't know who got that after his death. I think maybe my nephew has it.

EC was in the Army and married in Malta to Georgina Anne Johnston who was probably related to Gabriel Johnston the Governor of North Carolina. (Her Father and Grandfather were both named Gabriel Johnston,  both Captains in the Royal Navy).

The following comes from

http://website.lineone.net/~aldosliema/rnj.htm

"Georgina Anne JOHNSTON, 21+, spinster, born Malta, the daughter of Georgina and Captain Gabriel Johnston, R.N., married 4th November 1874, to Edward Cleaver MAXWELL, 21+, bachelor, of Black Torrington, Devon, the son of John Goodman Maxwell, Surgeon, 13th Regiment"

EC Maxwell had a daughter Annie 1879-1927 who married my Grandfather Arthur Pratt Thorp.

She was born in S Africa after the Zulu Wars where EC was obviously a regimental surgeon. I have a notation written by my Aunt that says she (Anne)came home on a troopship and was looked after in the Sergeants mess after her mother took to her bunk and her father was dying of some horrible tropical disease. She was fed on condensed milk and had her diapers washed in seawater. When she arrived at Plymouth she was very thin and covered in sores. EC died soon afterwards and is buried at Oakhampton Devon. (As was his wife some years later).

I have miniature pictures of EC and his wife.

Hope this is of some interest. I'd welcome any details you have of the rest of the family.

Regards

Steve Thorp
